Basic reasons why you need motor insurance
If you are earning money through the motor industry, whether you are fixing or selling vehicles, you should probably consider getting motor insurance to cover yourself. You read that right. Instead of covering the vehicles you are working with, you need to have a policy that covers general liability. According to the laws of the United Kingdom, motor insurance is required if your business is involved with any of the following activities:
- Sale or repair of new and used cars, caravans, motorcycles, or any commercial vehicle
- Installation of security or audio devices in cars or other vehicles

- Conducts mechanical, electrical or engineering work for any reason, even if it is agricultural
- Body work repairs of vehicles
- Replacement or fitting of exhausts and tyres
- Any tasks in which one becomes a recovery or breakdown operator
In addition to all this, if there are any industrial vehicles involved in the above activities, like tow trucks or the like, they must be registered with the MID.
Of course, the law should not be the only reason you sign up for motor insurance. There are many reasons why insurance is beneficial. If your customers’ vehicles get stolen or damaged, your insurance will cover the liability. The same is also true if your employees get sick due to improper health or safety measures within the workplace.
There are two types of motor insurance: road risk and combined. Road risk policies cover any vehicle used in the course of business. This is known as comprehensive coverage. Additional third-party coverage can also be offered on a road risk policy. If it is offered, you will receive coverage for fire or theft. Note, however, that neither third party nor comprehensive plans provide compensation if your vehicles or lost or damaged on your business property. For these situations, you will need a combined policy, as it covers almost any risk imaginable in the motor business. In some jurisdictions, combined policies are a legal requirement; in others the policies are strongly advised. Public liability coverage is an example, as it protects any client on your premises. If they fall or experience any physical hardship, your insurance will cover their legal and medical expenses if the case goes to court.
Remember, it is important to ensure that your motor trade business is covered from every angle, and it is strongly recommended that you take out adequate cover whatever service you provide, whether you run a small garage or act as a car salesman, financial protection in the event of a claim is vital.
